Grandson of Alexander Hamilton (bn1705) and Isobell Maxwell. Son of Robert Hamilton(c1730~1790)and his third wife Hester Chetwood. Robert, Sr and Hester were married at St Anne's Parish in Dublin in 1769.Their son Robert, Jr was the youngest of twenty two brothers and sisters.

Robert was born into one of Dublin's more prestigeous and politically influential familys. His uncle, Hugh Hamilton (c1728) was titled "Dean of Armagh" and "Bishop of Ossury". His uncle George was titled"Baron of The Exchequer" His father was titled as "Attornatus". Robert himself was well educated in the classical arts including Greek and Latin. There is record of his father making a new will on March 7, 1770 a few months after Robert was born, apparently to include him.
It was shortly after his fathers death that Robert left Dublin, some say because of political differences, and sailed to The United States.

Robert came into Charelston, S.C. in 1791. He met and married a Miss Altum in 1792, and they had two children, John (bn1793) and Robert (bn1797). After the death of his first wife he married Miss Finley and had two children, Loveda (bn1800) and Cynthia (bn1802). After the death of his second wife Robert came to (what was then called*) Buncombe County , North Carolina with his four children in 1802. In 1803 Robert married Ann Orr (bn1779) and sired nine children, Ann (1804),Mary (1807), William Orr(1809), Joseph (1811), Elizabeth (1814), Sabrina (1816), Julia Evaline(1818), Martha(18--), And Voltaire Condorset Volney(1822).

Robert became a schoolmaster and on April 22 of 1803 contracted to instruct twenty three young scholars at Cane creek in Buncombe County. Since his own children were not on the list of scholars he must have believed in home schooling. A copy of the text of Roberts contract with the Cane Creek school may be viewed below.

Robert's son, John Hamilton, was one of the fifteen Justices of the peace that became the ruling body of Henderson County when it was created in 1839.

Robert Hamilton's legacy has flourished through all of his children in the mountains of North Carolina and elsewhere. Through over a dozen generations his issue has multiplied over a thousand fold.
